Things You Should Know |
Things you should know:
Darin Di Pietro will send you a DVD of the new "Handbasket" video he made for my band, Half Zaftig. All you have to do is write to him and say you want one, hell send it to you free. Email him at [email protected].
Rob Crow is my new hero. Right now Im listening to his 2003 solo album, My Room Is A Mess. Hes one of the prime movers of Pinback, which was my favorite old-band-but-new-to-me of 2007. Ive been devouring the Pinback catalog since last October when I got Autumn Of The Seraphs, and then I found out Rob does solo albums, too. His solo albums have everything that I love most about Pinback, and theyre also much, much weirder and experimental. Rob Crow is my new man-crush.
The new Meshuggah, Obzen, is OFF. THE. HOOK. Download and listen to track 3, "Bleed", and try to explain to everyone around you when your head explodes.
I havent been blogging much lately. Ive been wanting to. Lately Ive been very conscious that lots of people I know and love read this, and Ive been... reticent. You know how there are certain subjects you just... dont go into... with people? Its like that. Im still, as I mentioned in "Mold On My Soles", trying to make a choice. And let it go. Its hard.
Thereve been questions about Mo. And the fitness regimen shes got me on. And progress thereof. Its going forward. Its going great. I can tell a difference, definitely. Thereve been some snags - I took an acting class this quarter and injured my right shoulder in an improv game. Thats been forcing Mo to tread carefully. Its getting better, finally. Thats a good thing. My abs are sore today. I need to lose this extra weight so that I can see them.
Heres a strange thing I found myself involved with: a local indie film director is making a SCIENCE FICTION MUSICAL (I know, right?). Ive read the script, its... hmmm. Well.
So, a few of the songs composed for the movie needed "rock band arrangements." I was approached about it, and Ive finished my work on six tracks (which is all Im doing). Wanna hear them? OK, download the following ZIP file, which has six MP3s of rough mixes in it: http://www.wonky-records.com/audio/mp3/liberationRockTunes.zip
I DID NOT WRITE these songs. They were given to me as simple MIDI files, and then I recorded all the parts in Pro Tools. In many cases, the guitar parts I played were exactly what the composer wrote (though that Steve Vai lick at the end of "Kick And Bust You" - that was me). I had the biggest impact on the drum parts, I pretty much changed all the drums around. That was fun. Somebody else will be recording the vocalists and making final mixes. I feel for whoever the poor sucker is thats got to sing "Eat This" - listen to that melody! So bizarre! Im glad I dont have to do it.
Ive seen some GREAT movies lately: Married Life, Paranoid Park, Snow Angels. 2/3rds of those I even saw for free. Nice.
I have a mild head cold today, two or three days into Spring, after not getting sick once this Winter. Dang it.
Im still going for my workout with Mo tomorrow, cold or no cold. |
